Andalusian Mackerel (Mediterranean) — a superb delicacy at a very affordable price

As often happens among the extraordinary and endless gourmet products we have in Spain, today I bring you mackerel — a fish that is inexpensive compared to others that share the Mediterranean Sea, like frigate mackerel (melva) or bluefin tuna. But it has a wonderful flavor.

Canned Mediterranean mackerel is an underrated delight! It’s also a very beautiful fish with lovely blue hues. But it shows its greatest splendor in conserva, bathed in olive oil that envelopes its even, very flavorful fillets. Here are some interesting and practical facts about it:

What is canned mackerel?

It’s mackerel (also known as scomber, mackerel in English) generally caught in the Mediterranean and canned in olive oil, sunflower oil, or even natural brine. It resembles sardines but is usually larger and has a slightly stronger flavor.

Why is Mediterranean mackerel special?

  • Fish quality: Mediterranean waters usually yield mackerel with a milder flavor and firm texture.
  • Sustainable fishing methods: Many Mediterranean brands use more traditional and sustainable techniques.
  • Artisanal production: Some canneries in southern Spain take great care with the cooking and canning process.

How can it be eaten?

  • Straight from the can with a squeeze of lemon
  • In salads with tomato, hard-boiled egg, and olives
  • On toast with avocado
  • With pasta, olive oil, garlic, and chili
  • Or even in homemade sushi!

Benefits

Like all oily fish, they are very healthy and highly recommended in our diet — in fact, essential.
  • Rich in omega-3
  • Good source of protein
  • Contains vitamin D and B12

Andalusian mackerel from La Conservera de Tarifa

If you’re looking for premium canned mackerel, Spain offers a wide range of gourmet preserves that stand out for their flavor, artisanal production, and sustainable origin. Our choice is La Conservera de Tarifa. La Conservera de Tarifa’s canned mackerel is a high-quality artisanal product, made in Tarifa (Cádiz) with more than a century of canning tradition. Its production process is characterized by the careful selection of mackerel caught in the Mediterranean, the manual cleaning of the fillets, and their neat arrangement in the container. They are preserved in extra virgin olive oil, which enhances their flavor and provides nutritional benefits. These fillets have a smooth, compact texture with a grayish-white color and the characteristic taste of oily fish.

Varieties available at Made in Spain Store

In our store Made in Spain Store, we offer La Conservera de Tarifa’s mackerel in two canned presentations: Andalusia Mackerel in Olive Oil (250g): Ideal for tapas, with clean, uniformly sized fillets. Mackerel Roe in Olive Oil (120g): Considered a delicacy, ideal as an appetizer or to enrich dishes like pastas or rice.

As you can see, it’s such an easy-to-enjoy delicacy all year round that you shouldn’t miss it. I always keep a couple of cans of mackerel in my pantry because it always plays a starring role in my salads.
