Barcelona, the city coveted by Americans Made in Spain Gourmet, highly sought-after products Barcelona, the city coveted by Americans Barcelona continues to be the favorite city for Americans in Spain. It is synonymous with unparalleled attraction and makes it irresistible for anyone who has the chance to come and enjoy it. In this case, a group of North American diplomats who had participated in a conference spent a few days in the city. And of course, one of the greatest attractions we can currently offer is our wide and very varied gastronomic offer. We had the privilege, earned over time, of being invited by the United States Consulate to be one of their culinary partners at a reception held in their honor on Tuesday, November 7, in the consulate gardens in the uptown area of Barcelona. We are grateful for the invitation from their Consul General in Barcelona, the Honorable Katie Stana. For us it was an excellent opportunity to project our commitment to the North American market, which is undoubtedly the most important market where Spanish gourmet products can grow significantly in the coming years. The turnout surprised us by the number of people who attended — more than 110 American diplomats from Europe, Asia and Latin America. A profile that for us was an excellent opportunity to confirm what we already knew: American society is eager to discover and consume our gourmet products, which remain so little known. The event began with a performance of the “Castells,” which are human towers generally erected on the occasion of major festivals in Catalan towns and cities by groups of enthusiasts who maintain this tradition. We were all moved to see how they quickly climbed several stories high. What the diplomat found there was an irresistible offering of gourmet products that were as desirable to the eye as they were to the taste. Our goal was to showcase this gastronomic level that is still little known from our country through the brands that accompany us in this international dissemination project of the Gourmet Made in Spain concept. We were joined by the following brands: Señorío de Montanera (Iberian cured meats), Jacoliva and Isbilya (Premium extra virgin olive oils), La Mar de Tazones, Conservera de Tarifa and M.A. Revilla (preserves), Antonieta Fruits (jams), Ojos del Guadiana (Manchego cheese), Sal de Ibiza (snacks and premium salt), Alemany (honeys and honey-based sweets), Les Garrigues (premium nuts), La Mundial (frizzante red and white wine), and Sucralín (natural sweetener). In some cases, their owners even accompanied us, such as Angel Martínez of Isbilya, Dimas Noval of La Mar de Tazones, and Oscar Gràcia of Sucralín. It was a great success for us because, above all, we were not there to overwhelm them or push as many products on them as possible. We were there to advise them. To share knowledge and values with these people, and to involve them in a very high-level gastronomic experience. Speaking English was, of course, a plus to accelerate relationships, including with our partners. This made interaction very fluid and, naturally, the level of interest grew, because they found it hard to understand why products of such high quality weren't already in the U.S. For example, they were surprised that Revilla’s Santoña anchovies were so impressive. It was a new product for them — so different from what they had considered anchovies until now. And so it was with everything. Of course, the 100% Iberian ham was the king — that’s no surprise — but the great acceptance of canned spider crab or bluefin tuna was notable, other true unknowns at first that ended up with the sign “sold out.” In conclusion, we can say that Spanish gourmet products have a great future if they are marketed and explained properly to the people who need to hear or read the right information — the kind that moves them and is truly distinctive and disruptive. It is an arduous task, but at Made in Spain Gourmet we know it will bring the success we long for. More and more producers are becoming clear about this every day and are joining our community.
