THE VINEYARDS OF PERINET

Perinet’s vineyards encompass three great visions of historic Priorat. The project as a whole allows the Perinet vines to shape a new balance of styles in winemaking. Specifically, the vineyard’s three climates correspond to three wine styles: warm and ripe: Mas Vell; fresh and long: Mas del Xes; and Mediterranean and aromatic: Pendents, in the municipality of Porrera.

The three plots show a strong personality, where various local and international varieties grow on steep slopes and terraces with different exposures and orientations. This allows the authenticity of the landscape to be expressed in the estate’s different wines, always linked to Priorat’s climate and slate soils.

Winemaking: The grapes for Merit are the first to be harvested at Perinet. This fruit comes from the coolest areas of the estate vineyards. The combination of Merlot, Syrah, Garnacha and Cariñena grapes from young vines creates a wine that fills the mouth with vitality and complexity. Grape selection allows for gentle tannin ripening, freshness and remarkable acidity. The blend is made up of Merlot, Syrah, Garnacha and Cariñena, which ferment and age for 12 months in stainless steel tanks.

Pairing: at Made in Spain we recommend it with meats, aged sheep’s and goat’s cheeses, and foie gras.

The region holds the coveted DOCa.

Today, the region holds the coveted “Denominación de Origen Calificada” designation, which in Spain it shares only with Rioja.

The Denominación de Origen Calificada Priorat is a small mountainous region located in the province of Tarragona. The Montsant mountain range borders it to the north; to the west lies the La Figuera range; to the east, the Molló range; and to the south, the territory opens along the course of the Siurana River downstream toward the Ebro. The Siurana River and its tributaries are the area’s main geographical artery, creating a series of valleys and small plains, also due to the geological sinuosity of the ranges and mountain slopes. According to Catalonia’s legislation on regional administrative division, the DOCa Priorat territory falls within a broader administrative boundary known as the “Comarca del Priorat,” which also includes an area that is not part of winegrowing Priorat.

The Denominación de Origen Calificada Priorat covers 17,629 hectares, of which 2,163.97 are planted with vines and cultivated by 513 winegrowers. Administratively, 9 municipalities form part of the DOCa Priorat: Bellmunt del Priorat, Gratallops, El Lloar, El Molar, La Morera de Montsant (which includes the village of Scala Dei within its municipality), Poboleda, Porrera, Torroja del Priorat, La Vilella Alta and La Vilella Baixa. In addition, within the boundaries of the DOQ Priorat are also the northern part of the municipality of Falset (the Masos de Falset area) and the eastern part of the municipality of El Molar (Les Solanes del Molar). La Morera de Montsant, Scala Dei, Gratallops, Torroja del Priorat, Porrera and Poboleda formerly formed part of the Priorat of the Charterhouse of Scala Dei. The rest were included in the delimitation of the appellation of origin carried out in 1932, which shaped the current DOCa Priorat territory. As a result of the expansion of vine growing and the quality of its wines, promoted, driven and dominated by the Carthusian monks, the area gained worldwide renown, making it today one of the most important wine regions in the world.

MAS DEL XES

The Mas de en Xes vineyard is Perinet’s largest, around 10.64 ha, distributed between 60% north-facing slopes (Cabernet and Syrah) and 40% northeast-facing slopes (Garnacha and Mazuelo). Syrah and Cabernet are planted on terraces, while the Garnacha and Mazuelo vines grow on narrow ledges that resemble an amphitheater, offering an exceptional view of Montsant at an altitude of 400 meters. The vineyard was planted between 2000 and 2001. Harvesting is manual and spread out over time, given the differences in grape ripening.

MAS VELL

The sunny orientation of this vineyard is its most distinctive feature: the vines face south, producing grapes of exceptional ripeness. Unlike most areas in southern Priorat, where vines grow at a lower altitude (200-250 m), Mas Vell lies between 385 and 450 m. This altitude helps the fruit aromas remain present in the wines, together with notable acidity, giving them beautiful, balanced ripeness. The vineyard covers 7.44ha, planted with Merlot, Syrah, Garnacha and Cabernet. The vines are 17 years old, arranged on terraces and trained on trellises. Both pruning and harvesting are carried out by hand.

PENDENTS

Pendents, located near Porrera, is the steepest plot in our vineyards. In some areas the slope exceeds 30º. With a fully north-eastern orientation (west), Pendents is strongly influenced by sea winds. At 4 hectares, this is the smallest vineyard planted at Perinet, yet it has great personality, thanks to the purity of the landscape and the spectacular setting. The planted varieties are Mazuelo (Cariñena), Garnacha and Cabernet.

Bodega Perinet

Perinet is located in the north of the prestigious DOCa Priorat, an ancient wine-producing area where Garnacha and Cariñena thrive in a Mediterranean climate especially well suited to vine growing. Located 90 minutes southwest of Barcelona, Perinet is the essence of Priorat: a combination of the region’s deep winemaking history, slate-rich soils, and profound, concentrated wines with structure and balance. Its owners, Kevis MGlynn and Lane Auten, passionate about the world of wine, arrived in Spain in 2012 and it was seeing Priorat and falling completely at its feet, as they put it. Perinet winery is located in one of the most spectacular settings in Priorat, between the towns of La Morera del Montsant and Porrera. It is surrounded by vineyards planted with the local varieties Cariñena and Garnacha, as well as the French varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The three vineyards that make up the estate, Finca Mas Vell, Mas d’en Xesc and Finca Planetes, extend across more than 120 hectares of sloping vineyards. Three estates producing wines with personality and very different expressions thanks to their slate terroir and climate: warm and ripe at Mas Vell; fresh at Mas Xesc; and Mediterranean at Finca Planetes. Authentic, powerful, unique and generous wines. The winery dates back to the 18th century, founded by the French Perinet family, who settled in the region while fleeing phylloxera in France. Over time, this small piece of land was transformed into a vineyard producing wines of excellent quality. Perinet’s flagship wine, 1194, pays tribute to the Carthusian monastery of Escaladei (Scala Dei in Latin), founded in 1194, whose monks introduced the art of viticulture to Priorat. Today, Perinet’s avant-garde winery, its impressive barrel rooms and its vineyards help define the reputation of the entire region. The Perinet estate covers a total of 120 hectares near the villages of Poboleda and Porrera, at more than 400m above sea level. The modern winery building features an exquisite Gaudí-inspired barrel room, a tasting lounge with majestic views of the Montsant mountain range, and a welcoming terrace for savoring the estate’s products. Perinet is considered an aesthetic jewel among Priorat wineries.";}i:1;a:3:{s:5:"title";s:20:"Zoltan Nagy’s Opinion";s:2:"id";s:19:"opinion-zoltan-nagy";s:7:"content";s:710:"
