Vinyes Domènech makes this wine with Garnacha and Merlot in Priorat (in the Sierra de Llaberia, Tarragona).

These are “lands” that imbue the vineyards with a special character, producing great wines for cellaring. Vinyes Domènech, with organic agriculture (certified by CCPAE-2007) and biodynamic practices, works to create harmony between the vine and the biodiversity that surrounds it, so that they nourish one another and produce wines that mirror their landscape. All of this is done to make healthier wines, v-label certified and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Technical sheet

Winery: Vinyes Domenech

D.O.: Montsant

Variety: 95% Garnacha and 5% Merlot.

Alcohol: 15.0% vol.

Tasting note:

This wine has a brilliant cherry color. On the nose, the aromatic impact is almost immediate. It is a luscious wine that combines minerality on the nose with aromas of red berries, blueberries, and plums. The tannins are present but gentle. On the palate it is creamy, surely thanks to the Garnacha Peluda combined with the softness that characterizes Merlot. It leaves an aftertaste with fruity notes and mineral touches.

Serving temperature: 16ºC - 18ºC.

Viticulture: organic, certified by the CCPAE, and biodynamic

Geology and soil: clay-limestone soil, shallow and low in organic matter.

Winemaking: made with spontaneous yeast, and the vinification of each terrace is carried out separately in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the Furvus red wine rests for 12 months in French oak barrels before bottling.

Pairing: at Made in spain Gourmet we especially recommend it with small game, mushrooms, roasts, roasted red meats, stews, grilled red meats, goat cheeses, semi-cured cheeses, and cured cheeses.

COMMITMENT TO THE LAND

Founded in 2002 by the Domenech-Nogueroles family with the aim of preserving and improving the estate’s natural heritage, creating a winemaking project that expresses the landscape and biodiversity of its surroundings, becoming a unique ecosystem.
In 2015, the result of all this work was consolidated with the recognition of “Qualified Single Estate Wine” by Incavi and the DO Montsant. This recognition distinguishes the unique climatic characteristics of the vineyard, wines made from grapes from the same estate with lower yields, and the most demanding protocols and scores from
the D.O., as well as national and international prestige built over more than ten years.

THE TERROIR

UNIQUE HIGH-ALTITUDE VINEYARDS

Vinyes Domènech is located in a protected natural area of great beauty between the Sierra de Llaberia and Montalt, south of Priorat and within the D.O. Montsant.

Over the years, they have incorporated vineyards from the best sites in the D.O. Montsant—Capçanes, La Figuera, El Masroig, and others—always seeking the highest areas, old vines, and soils that give each wine personality and typicity. In short, unique vineyards with very low yields where Garnacha and Cariñena achieve their fullest expression.

BIODYNAMIC AND ORGANIC AGRICULTURE

Vinyes Domènech’s biodynamic practices prioritize the basic principles at work in nature, keeping them in mind to provide balance and support the health of the plant.

Vinyes Domènech’s biodynamic practices prioritize the basic principles at work in nature, keeping them in mind to provide balance and support the health of the plant. It is truly an open form of knowledge, rather than a closed set of methods and techniques. The plants receive influences from the earth and the energies of the universe, which mark their vital rhythms.

Everything they feed the soil in the form of manure, compost, residues, grasses, leaves, roots, and so on is incorporated so that, after a few months, it disappears and integrates with the Earth, enriching it with humus and making it more fertile. Compost is very important for the vine. They need to revitalize the soil by providing good-quality, stable organic matter and balancing the development of the vine.

BIODIVERSITY

Their distinctive value lies in making the most of the biodiversity provided by the forests surrounding their vineyards, seeing it as an interactive ecosystem that offers protection and balance to flora and fauna.

Their distinctive value lies in making the most of the biodiversity provided by the forests surrounding their vineyards, seeing it as an interactive ecosystem that offers protection and balance to flora, fauna, and microorganisms. It is a unique and different process that can only be enjoyed in a natural setting of great biological diversity. You will feel how the nature and landscape surrounding their vineyards captivate you, and you will understand the essence of their wines.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability at Vinyes Domenech is a circular project in which every process and stage is designed with the aim of reducing the consumption of natural resources and greenhouse gas emissions.

D.O. Montsant

The DO Montsant is home to everything from large cooperatives to family initiatives, as well as private wineries of various sizes and producers who make wines from their own vineyards using the facilities of other wineries.

Although the DO Montsant included 28 wineries when it was founded, today more than 50 wineries coexist there. Despite structural differences, they all share the same goal: to make quality wines that speak of this land.

The wines of the DO Montsant are the fruit of a centuries-old tradition and current academic knowledge. Artisanal products in which human hands are involved throughout the entire winemaking process—a process that is the result of an essential balance between the vineyard and the winery.

Grape varieties

The vineyards of the DO Montsant are planted between 50 meters above sea level in the lowest areas and 700 meters in the highest areas.

Among the grape varieties authorized by the DO Montsant, 4 stand out as historic and predominant. For whites, these are Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, and for reds, Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena, which represent more than 65% of Montsant’s vineyards.

These historic and native varieties are the ones that best adapt to the territory and give the DO Montsant its uniqueness within the global wine scene.

In addition to these historic varieties, in the DO Montsant we can find wines made with Chardonnay, Muscat, Pansal, Parellada, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Peluda, Merlot, Monastrell, Picapoll Tinta, Syrah, and Tempranillo.

Garnacha and Cariñena, the essence of Montsant

Garnacha Tinta

A variety well adapted to heat and drought. With a very sensual aromatic profile, it produces wines of great complexity and good structure. Notes of citrus fruits over a background of balsamic and spice aromas are characteristic of Garnacha Tinta. Furthermore, because of its high sugar concentrations when overripe and its oxidative capacity, Garnacha Tinta is used in the production of fortified wines.

Cariñena

It is a relatively productive variety that requires sun exposure to ripen properly. Cariñena wines show pronounced pigmentation and are aromatically very intense, with moderate alcohol levels and excellent acidity. On the palate they are slightly astringent and very elegant.

Garnacha Blanca

A variety well adapted to warm climates, with very juicy and aromatic fruit, from which white wines with personality and great palate presence are made. Garnacha Blanca wines enjoy good acidity and balance, whether young or aged in barrel. Honey and undergrowth aromas, along with a silky mouthfeel, are characteristic of Garnacha Blanca.

Macabeo

A variety with large grapes, thin skin, and a golden-yellow color. It ripens well and concentrates sugars effectively. It produces dry, fresh, and balanced wines. Fruity aromas of apple and white fruits are characteristic of Macabeo. These wines are consumed young and, in many cases, are used to make blends with Garnacha Blanca.

The wines of the DO Montsant are faithful to their origin, resulting in unique wines that speak of how a climate of contrasts, rugged terrain, soil variability, grape varieties, and human skill come together to give life to distinctive wines with identity. The wines of the DO Montsant bring diversity and enrich the DO while also defining it as a whole.

Reds

These are the most common wines in the DO Montsant, as these lands have traditionally always been red-wine territory. More than 90% of grape production corresponds to red varieties, among which Garnacha and Cariñena stand out as those best adapted to the conditions of the DO and best able to convey its identity. Both give full-bodied wines, highly suitable for aging. Garnacha Tinta has a very sensual aromatic profile, with great complexity, and produces well-structured wines. Cariñena, for its part, is aromatically very intense and produces wines with moderate alcohol levels and very good acidity.

Whites

They are made almost exclusively with the two traditional varieties of the area: Garnacha Blanca, with more body and structure, and Macabeo, which gives finer wines. Both are distinguished by silkiness, structure, and elegant, subtle aromas.

Rosés

Rosé wines have gained presence over the years. They are intense on the nose and silky on the palate, and stand out for their fruity aromas.

Fortified wines

These wines have a long tradition in this territory. In the past, when wineries were family-run, it was common to have one barrel of rancio wine and another of sweet wine. Today, the production of traditional liqueur wines is much more systematized, while still maintaining its place within overall production. In addition, sweet wines, rancio wines, and mistelas have recently regained their prestige as gourmet products.

Bodegas Domenech

Vinyes Domenech winery is synonymous with the pursuit of perfection through simplicity, while also creating something truly distinctive. For them, making wine is impossible without caring for the entire surrounding environment as the highest priority. That is how Joan Ignasi and Rita began in 2002, knowing that this area of the Montsant Natural Park is wonderfully unique, with exceptional biodiversity and an incomparable landscape. They wanted to capture all of it in a bottle, so it could be shared with as many people as possible—so that, with every sip, they could be transported to these magnificent landscapes of Tarragona, an hour and a half from Barcelona. A true luxury. And all their wines are equally luxurious, crafted as single-varietal wines from local grapes: white, red, red-grey and hairy Grenache are the chosen varieties for their wines. Considered one of the finest wineries in the D.O. Montsant, they are deeply committed to caring for and preserving the land. They work the soil and their vineyards using organic and biodynamic agriculture, prioritizing the basic principles at work in nature in order to achieve balance and better plant health. Because sustainability is a top priority for the Domènech family, year after year they are achieving something highly significant: reducing the consumption of natural resources and, consequently, greenhouse gas emissions. This becomes clear as soon as you arrive at the vineyards. The natural landscape is strikingly beautiful, set around a natural amphitheater and protected by a lush forest of great natural beauty in the Priorat region. It is characterized by natural slopes that create different mesoclimates, which in turn produce unique wines. That is why, after they won us over, they earned a privileged place in our wine selection at MadeinSpain.store.
